The Large Hadron Collider may create a mini black hole by accelerating protons to .9999999% the speed of light and colliding them. There is some concern that it could have disastrous consequences for the entire universe if these theoretical mini black holes once created don't Hawking radiate out of existence. I don't get it.How could creating a mini black hole (smaller than a proton) be dangerous? If it doesn't Hawking itself out of existence right away, it will likely begin sucking in other subatomic particles from nearby matter, which will make it grow, so it can suck in more, etc., etc., and turn the Earth into a black hole. It wouldn't affect anything except Earth, but it would kill us all.|||I just posted a question about CERN 30 minutes ago. Our Top Physics Contributer posted there. Go check her response out. Very good. The question is "CERN and The Large Hadron Collider"
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>How could creating a mini black hole (smaller than a proton) be dangerous? What do you mean by Large Hadron Collider?|||Black hole = high density matter with strong gravational field
earth = large ball of dirt and rock(mostly)

earth + black hole = black hole with slightly higher mass.

matter near a black hole will be destroyed via the great gravtational force. thus a black hole (even a tiny one) generated on the surface of the earth would cause the destruction of earth. How could creating a mini black hole (smaller than a proton) be dangerous?thats quite a scary thought.|||What a coincidence! I sometimes refer to my wiener as the "Large Hadron Collider"... But my girlfriend gets really pissed when I refer to her as "my mini black hole"|||a black hole of this size would not EVER cause the destruction of the earth.
it's event horizon would be way too small and there would be almost zero matter within the horizon so it would have nothing to "suck in" and sustain itself, therefore it would eject a tiny amount of plasma (as black holes do) and very quickly cease to exist.

that's my theory anyway.|||um, we can throw all the criminals into the hole....it will work out great, then we can dispose of spent nuclear rods...i think we are on to something...|||Even a mini black hole could be dangerous because of their intense pull. I wouldn't be concerned about the whole universe, though, or even the whole world. A black hole only pulls in what is within its Event Horizon.
There are black holes in the Universe and speculation about one within the Milky Way Galaxy. These are not affecting the Universe. Why would a mini black hole do so?|||The suns event horizon may appear quicker than first thought.|||I hope it isn't........|||Typical physicist behaviour. They are the most sadistic bunch going. They pick on the smallest thing they can find and then bash them together until they fall to bits. I hope the black holes get them and don't just radiate away until you can no longer hear their little tinny synthesized voices.|||It will at random penetrate anything and everything including inside the Earth core and keep on eating like.... OK lets put it this way...Its like eating tongue you never know when you're finished.|||The concentration of such large amounts of energy will surely make everything collapse in on itself, starting with our sphincters.|||It's something to think about. Remember, the universe itself started out as a singularity way smaller than a proton. I believe that it was Einstein who feared that physicists would continue to dick around with quantum physics until they found a way to destroy the whole universe. He's probably going to be right on this one too.

Wouldn't that be a hell of a thing if man accidentally destroyed the universe before their god got the change to?|||Let's just hope it's big enough to devour reality television programs and 90% of our vapid "celebrities."|||Create it and see.
