My Girlfriend and I just got a baby mini dachshund about 1 1/2 weeks ago. We love her, but she is making our lives very difficult at the moment. She HATES being left alone and is ripping up our carpet, whining and Barking. So heres my question - i have read in a few places that Doxies love company and other people with similarly troublesome doxies have solved the problem with getting a company dog so they are not alone when the owners are out. So im considering this to make our little baby happier and make our lives a bit easier. I have read that i should keep the single dog till she is toilet trained and then bring in the 2nd dog as this will make it easier.

My question is, what dog would you recommend? I want something small, im considering another doxie, but id like something that will fetch balls and that i wont have to worry about back problems down the line, something a bit more athletic, but the most important thing is that the 2 will get along well and help each other behave. What is the best dog to keep a Mini Dachshund company?A second dog is not the answer to your troubles. Your Dachshund is being a normal puppy -- puppies hate being left alone, they bark, whine, chew stuff and make mischief. Get a second puppy and you will get the same again and the result will be double the trouble.

I like gaps between dogs to be at least a year apart. That way your first dog should be fully house trained, obedience trained and it should also have bonded to you.

Something small and athletic? nothing fits the bill better than a Jack Russell Terrier. Boston Terriers would be a second best fit.|||Welcome to the world of Dachshunds.

First I would like to let you know that doxies are extremely athletic and will fetch balls until your arm falls off from throwing them. If you keep the puppies weight under control as it gets older, it will not have back problems.

Companion dogs are great but what will happen is that your new baby will teach the other dogs its bad habits - what needs to happen is:

Train you puppies to go into its kennel when you are gone.

Train yourself not to make a big deal out of leaving.

Give your puppy something to chew - it should be something that looks totally like a toy. Dogs can't tell your good socks from the one you gave it to play with.

If you have your heart set on getting a companion dog another doxie would be great - they will keep each other company and reassure each other. It will make training easier not harder as they will copy each other (good and bad) and there is nothing so cute as seeing them play together. Any age is fine to introduce them to each other but make sure that if your 1st puppy is shy you get a new puppy that is very calm.

Do not be surprised if they fight a bit at first - they will just be figuring out who is the boss between them. What is the best dog to keep a Mini Dachshund company?Hello. I just lost my long haired mini. Brandi would have been 16 years old in august of this year, but after a 9 month battle with melanoma she finally passed away on memorial day evening. My other dog, a 65 pound German Shepherd was acquired as a puppy when Brandi was about 3 years old. They became the best of buddies and companions for each other when I wasn't home. Morgan, my GS is a male and with Brandi being female never ever offered tohurt her or was mean to her in anyway. We both miss her terribly but wanted to pass this info on to you that the doxies can be best of pals with a larger breed. Don in Illinois|||Doxies are like peanuts, you can never stop with one :)

Get an other doxie ...What is the best dog to keep a Mini Dachshund company?Hi, What you are experiencing is typical puppy of any type. However, dachshunds do like to have a brother or sister. And believe it or not in my experience they do know when they are in the company of another dachshund and they do seem to be more comforted. Many people will choose another small dog such as a chihuahua (seems to be a very popular pair up - hence the vast population of Chi-Weenies). Don't let people scare you into getting opposite sex dogs either... they get along fine with the same sex especially when introduced at puppyhood. It is only when they are older that they will express their interest in preferring to be with one sex or the other and a new dog is introduced (I have a friend who has a b/t dapple female that HATES red females - go figure).
Next, when you leave your puppy alone crate her! This will help with housetraing as well as give her security and keep her safe from injury both external and internal. If you are going to get another dog crate them together they will play and keep each other company and create a great bond. Be sure it is big enough for both of them and as they get older you may have to get a bigger crate - which it never hurts to have two in case you have to isolate one of them for any reason. Dachshunds can be very athletic. They can do agility, they love to fetch and tug-o-war and I have a friend that has tought hers to play hide and seek and taught them to hunt for Easter Eggs. Yes, you have to take some consideration of their backs, but mostly you do not want them jumping up and down off the bed and furniture and you can easily teach them to wait for you to put them up or down or teach them to use pet steps or ramp. Let's talk about toilet training... you are more likely to have a backslide if you have one almost toilet trained and then bring in another that you have to housebreak. Get one now and do it together. In the case of dachshunds and many small dogs they are usually 5 - 7 months old before you start having much consistancy in housetraining. I am not sure about your training techniques but I would be happy to give suggestions for this and other behavior issues. As for them or any two puppies helping each other behave... no, they help each other get in trouble. But they can be more occupied in a positive matter when there are two.

I am a dachshund rescuer and have 4 of my own and in the last year my count on dachsies that have past thru my doors and went to their forever homes is around 25 with the most in my house at one time was a dozen. They are great little dogs and so loyal and loving.

Hope this helps,
Michele
