My 9 month old mini dachshund has become very aggressive. He has bitten me and my husband. He attacks the ironing board viciously, he goes bezerk when the hair dryer is own, and when we take him out he trys to attack people walking by. What to do?What to do about aggressive mini dachshund?The very first thing I would do, is take him to the vet and have him run a Thyroid panel. Low thyroid can cause aggression. If the Thyroid panel comes back as normal, no you start to treat the behavior. I'm going to say the most likely, that you treated your mini dachshund, like a little dog, Big Mistake. Dachshunds, both standard and mini's are bred to take on quarry, significantly larger than itself. It was originally bred in Germany for badger. Knowing that, dachshunds, should not be allowed to get away with any bad / obnoxious behavior. When you do let them get away with it, they become nasty, agressive biting machines and will terrorise you and your house hold, any visitors and acting like an alligator on walks. He attacks on walks because he has been undersocialized, so he tries to attack first out out of fear and insecurity. He's got the "I'll get you, before you get me" attitude. Get this dog into a good obedience class that specializes in aggression. Be very careful, because a lot of people who claim they understand aggression, do not and will ruin your dog even more than you already did. In the meantime, this dog needs to be on leash in the home, so you have more control over him. You also need to start implementing the "Nothing In Life is Free" program. Which is the dog has to earn for everything he wants, from food, treats, toys and pets. For instance, time to feed the dog, instead of just putting the food down, you instead, ask him to sit. If he sits, he gets the food, if he doesn't..oh well, try again in a couple of minutes. Does he nudge your hand to pet him? Then, instead of automatically petting him, ask him to sit or down, when he does that then you pet him. With the leash, you will have control of his actions. He should not be allowed ont he couch or on the bed. He needs to be taken down a peg or 2 (or 3).What to do about aggressive mini dachshund?He's due to be neutered. He also needs to be resocalised and needs to be taught that you are in control. I would suggest asking your vet for a thyroid test however he may be too young for this sort of problem. Ask for advise from you vet and take him to puppy training classes. Also every time he bites a family member or a visitor ask them to stand up, cross their arms and turn their back on him. Ignore him until he stops jumping up and biting and keep your back to him. After he's calmed down return to what you were doing. And repeat every time he bites. As for him biting passers by. As you approach someone, if you feel him tugging on the lead to get to them, walk in the opposite direction. (turn around and call his name) once he's calm, turn back around and head towards the person again, if he does it again, turn and walk in the opposite direction. He'll soon understand. Another thing to do (you'll have to choose which one you want to do) have treats in your pocket. As you approach someone, make him stop and sit, distract him with the treats and give him a treat after the person has passed and he hasn't tried to attack.
