Wifi is something local, like they have at hotels and coffee shops, etc. You are thinking of 3G, which has much better range and comes through a cellular company. Don't forget that you have to pay a per month fee for this, typically $40, and you are locked into a contract like with a phone. Notebooks aren't as good as normal laptops, in that aspects of the laptop are compromised in order to get it that compact. Notebooks don't normally have cd/dvd drives and have less input output ports (some which you will probably never use anyway). But you just want to use it for internet and music, so for that it is perfect. Wi-fi is wireless internet basically. You have a wireless card built in to your laptop. Most of the new ones have them nowadays. So basically, there are wireless internet signals from hotspots and if you have access to a hotspot, such as your own, you can access it using your built in wireless card.
