I have an oprtunity to buy a mini pom, havent seen him yet. I have pic though. There is only this one left out of the litter. When I do go see him how can I tell if it a true toy pom and not the runt of the litter? Please anyone to help me will be greatly appreciated. I am driving 6 hours to go see him. Thank you!How can you tell a mini toy pom from it being the runt of the litter of poms???Seeing as Pomeranians only come in one size (3-7 lbs), any "mini toy pomeranian" will probably be a runt - that's what "Teacup", "Mini", and in some cases "Toy" mean when added to a regular breed name... it's runt breeding to runt to make them smaller. So yes this dog will likely be a runt, whether its a "true toy pom" or not.
If this one is the last to go then i would ask the breeders why. Since you won't have the other litter mates to compare him to then you won't really know if it was the runt or not (unless breeder still has the litter.) If mom and dad are in the smaller range and this person is selling the dogs as "Mini Toy Poms" then back away and do NOT buy this puppy.
I would give the breeder a call before going up and see if the mom/dad have AKC papers, were genetic tested for disease, the age of mom, how often they bred mom, etc. If the dogs have no papers or weren't tested, or if they refuse to tell you over the phone how often mom was bred then don't go. You'll likely end up with an unhealthy puppy.|||There is no true "mini" or "toy" pomeranian - there is only one size. If your breeder is marketing this dog as a "mini" or "toy", then you need to ask them why.
From the AKC web site:
Size, Proportion, Substance
The average weight of the Pomeranian is from 3 to 7 pounds, with the ideal weight for the show specimen being 4 to 6 pounds. Any dog over or under the limits is objectionable. However, overall quality is to be favored over size. The distance from the point of shoulder to the point of buttocks is slightly shorter than from the highest point of the withers to the ground. the distance from the brisket to the ground is half the height at the withers. He is medium-boned, and the length of his legs is in proportion to a well-balanced frame. When examined, he feels sturdy. How can you tell a mini toy pom from it being the runt of the litter of poms???You are wasting your time.
There is no such thing as a "mini" or "toy" Pomeranian -- Pomeranians are in the Toy group, and they are already small. Anyone breeding them smaller on purpose is doing so to the detriment of their dogs' health.
Also note that the "runt" of a litter often grows to be a normal-sized adult. Just because it is smaller than its littermates now, doesn't mean that it won't grow to be 5-6 lbs. (like a true, *normal* Pomeranian).
Please dump this idiot "breeder" and find someone more responsible.

Check the AKC website for the breed standard of the pom. It is already classed as a toy breed in its correct size.
Run from this breeder. How can you tell a mini toy pom from it being the runt of the litter of poms???A "mini toy" pom is the runt. There is no size classification amongst poms, they should all be the same size. The AKC specifies that there is only ONE size, and all poms are in the "toy" class. This breeder sounds like an irresponsible idiot and you need to do some more research.|||If the person told you it is a mini toy pom, that means it is the runt of the litter, or it was inbred in some way to make it smaller. If it infact was inbred then your new puppy will be very sick very often.|||there is no such thing as a "mini" or "toy" Pom.. poms only come in one recognized size. If this pom is smaller than the average pom pup of the same age.. then it IS a runt!
