I have an HP mini 1000 laptop and i just bought the vga adapter to connect it to an external monitor and I cannot get it to work. When I turn on the external monitor it goes right to sleep. Fn + F? button. i have a toshiba laptop and it's Fn + F8 to cycle through the display options. Look at your F keys and search for a monitor icon on the key. should be fairly simple.
